Let Loose on European Mountains

The Pyrenees are beautiful. Less populated than the Alps and for that reason there's a good chance of seeing plenty of wildlife. Eagles, griffon vultures, and the lammergeier, a huge bird that drops bones onto rocks to get to the marrow inside. You'll also find izards, mouflon, and wild boar; maybe signs of bear.

A suggested route, and one for out-standing scenery: we start at Gavarnie and into the Cirque where we turn right and climb up to the Sarradets mountain refuge. The next day we pass through the Breche de Roland, enter Spain, and cross the mountain to the Goriz hut for our second night. This stands before the Ordesa Gorge known as the Grand Canyon of Europe. A day's descent through the gorge brings us into Bujaruelo for our third night in a very comfortable refuge before our fourth day, which takes over a pass and back into France.

Slovenia sits on the eastern end of the Alps known as the Julian Alps. Triglav is the highest at 2,864 metres, and its summit is the ambition of many Slovenes. It is a special place and you walk through forest, mountain slope and sometimes a little snow at the top. Again, there are mountain refuges where you spend an interesting night in the company of different nationalities, and be in a position to see the glory of the mountain at daybreak.

Switzerland is well known for its mountains with many 4000 metre peaks. Much of the Valais region has tranquillity and charm especially with the allure of springtime flowers.
